Chapter 19 Old Wu's Sudden Arrival
Chapter 19 Old Wu's Sudden Arrival
Looking at the entry requirements for the "chef" profession, Qin Chuan silently made a mental estimate.
Five dishes? That's not difficult. We can make four of them today. We're only missing a cold dish, which we can make up for later.
As for the five people's approval, Aunt Liu counts as one, leaving four.
Qin Chuan thought for a moment and had an idea.
Once the dishes were prepared, Aunt Liu helped carry them to the table.
Just then, someone knocked on the courtyard gate.
"Coming, coming." Aunt Liu got up to open the door.
The door bolt was pulled, and Old Li stood outside, wearing a gray cloth short jacket, carrying a lotus leaf bag in one hand and a string of sausages in the other.
"Old Li? Come in quickly, we're just getting something to eat, have some with us." Aunt Liu stepped aside to let him in.
Old Li stepped over the threshold and said with a smile, "That's perfect timing, I also brought some things with me."
He stuffed the lotus leaf package and sausage into Aunt Liu's hands. "The roast duck was bought from Qingyunlou. I couldn't resist the aroma when I passed by. The sausage is homemade; my skills are so-so, so please don't be too critical."
Aunt Liu did not refuse, knowing the good intentions Old Li had for Qin Chuan.
She had previously told Old Li about Qin Chuan staying here.
The old man didn't say anything, but he remembered it.
Aunt Liu said gratefully, "You've gone to so much trouble."
"Hey, what's a roast duck to you?" Old Li waved his hand, his gaze falling on the food on the table. He sniffed, "Wow, this aroma is even more tempting than my roast duck. Aunt Liu, your cooking skills have improved today."
Aunt Liu glanced back at Qin Chuan, her eyes crinkling into slits with a smile: "It wasn't me who made it, it was this kid. He said he'd cook for me next time."
Old Li was stunned for a moment, then looked Qin Chuan up and down, as if he couldn't believe it.
Qin Chuan had already turned around and gone to the kitchen to get a set of bowls and chopsticks, placed them next to himself, and pulled out a stool: "Uncle Li, sit down and have something to eat. We can chat while we eat, and you can try my cooking."
Old Li didn't stand on ceremony. He sat down, picked up a piece of meat, and his eyes lit up: "Not bad, kid. You've got some skills."
Qin Chuan smiled and poured a cup of rice wine for Uncle Li.
Uncle Li, like Aunt Liu, is a kind person and has helped him a lot in the past.
Old Li took a sip of rice wine, smacked his lips, nodded in satisfaction, then took out a wallet from his pocket, handed it to Qin Chuan, and said,
"I sold that yellow fur that Qin kid had last time. The buyer was a fur dealer who travels all over the country and knows his stuff. He said that although the white fur wasn't exactly pure, it was rare and he gave me eighty-five coins. It's not much money, don't think it's too little."
Qin Chuan poured another cup for Uncle Li: "That's plenty, that's plenty, Uncle Li, thank you for your hard work."
"What's the trouble? It's just running an errand." Old Li waved his hand.
......
The three people sat around a small square table, and had just started eating when...
Suddenly, there was another loud knocking on the door.
"Bang, bang, bang," each sound more urgent than the last, as if they were trying to smash the door to pieces.
Who is it?
Seeing this, Aunt Liu quickly got up to open the door.
Upon opening the door, three or four menacing-looking people stood in front of it.
They were all dressed in black short jackets with straps tied at the cuffs, looking like gangsters and thugs.
The one leading the group was none other than Wu Laosi.
When Wu Laosi saw the door open, he stepped forward, braced his right hand against the doorframe, and asked, "Tell me, did you just see a man? About twenty-four or twenty-five years old, wearing a blue cloth robe."
Aunt Liu shook her head: "I was eating inside just now and didn't see any man dressed in blue cloth."
Upon hearing this, Wu Laosi glanced inside and vaguely saw two figures.
He grabbed the door panel and pushed it aside, saying, "I don't see anyone? I see there are still people inside. Let me go in and take a look."
Aunt Liu panicked. She knew exactly what kind of people the Iron Hand Gang were; if they were allowed to search the house, a lot of things would definitely be missing.
Rumbling through drawers and cabinets is the least of it; stealing is commonplace; and if they see something they like, they'll just take it.
She gripped the doorframe tightly with one hand, her voice hardening: "What are you doing? I'm just a woman, and you barge in like this in the middle of the night. How am I supposed to face people if word gets out?"
Wu Laosi wasn't buying it. He scoffed, "I don't care how you behave. The gang lost something, the boss gave the order, and you're not letting us in? You're obviously guilty."
He waved to the men behind him, "Brothers, let's rush in together. Search carefully, don't miss any spots."
The people behind him responded and rolled up their sleeves, ready to squeeze through the door.
Just as Wu Laosi and his men were about to break down the door,
At this moment,
A voice came from inside the house.
"Brother Wu, it's been a long time." Seeing that the situation was not right, Qin Chuan also came out of the house.
He walked behind Aunt Liu, gently patted her shoulder, and gestured for her to move aside.
Aunt Liu turned around and saw it was him. She hesitated for a moment, then turned to the side.
At first, Wu Laosi didn't recognize Qin Chuan, but then he realized and said, "It's you, kid. You live here?"
"I'll borrow you for a few days." As he spoke, Qin Chuan took Wu Laosi's hand and asked, "Brother Wu, are you arresting someone?"
Feeling the copper coin in his hand, Wu Laosi's expression softened considerably.
He discreetly pocketed the copper coin and said, "Hey, that guy who caused trouble at the gambling den last time, the one who injured Brother Zhou's leg, got caught. But before we knew it, this kid ran over here. The boss gave the order, so we came here to find him."
Qin Chuan nodded, a look of understanding on his face: "Thank you all for your hard work, brothers in the gang. It's so late and you're still out catching people, without even having time to eat a hot meal."
He paused, then stepped aside so that Wu Laosi could see the situation inside the room.
A small square table, a few sets of bowls and chopsticks, several plates of food, and Old Li standing to one side.
Qin Chuan continued, "However, we've been eating indoors the whole time, and we haven't seen any men in green robes."
Wu Laosi glanced inside, then looked away.
Eat people with short mouths, and take people softly.
"I believe you, brother." Wu Laosi patted Qin Chuan on the shoulder. "Then let's go ask around at other places first. If you see this person, remember to let me know. You know the rules of the gang: if you know something but don't report it, you'll be punished as an accomplice."
"Don't worry, Brother Wu, if I see this person, I'll call you right away." Qin Chuan nodded with a smile. "Brother Wu, would you like to come in for a drink? To warm yourself up."
"Next time," Wu Laosi waved his hand, turned around and gestured with his chin to the group behind him, "Let's go, to the next place."
Seeing that the group had walked away, Qin Chuan closed the door.
This happened.
The three of them lost their appetite and ate a few bites hastily.
Old Li then took his leave and returned to his residence.
