Chapter 9 A Small Test
Chapter 9 A Small Test
The emergency response team of Zhiwei Technology Company is a non-permanent organization. Apart from Ji Yongsheng, who has served as the team leader for the past few years, the team members are all temporarily recruited.
When Ji Yongsheng brought up this title, it meant that something big had happened to the company.
Seeing his demeanor, many who had been somewhat uneasy calmed down. They realized that their own affairs were nothing compared to this, and thus began to observe others, speculating about who was about to suffer a major misfortune.
Ji Yongsheng said, "President Gu, please explain the situation first."
"Okay." Gu Shiming cleared his throat and said, "Yesterday morning, Department Eight forwarded an eye-tracking analysis commission. After our engineers completed the analysis using the company's standard model, they reviewed it again using their own algorithm model. The conclusions drawn from these two analyses were quite different. In the end, the engineers compiled the report based on the conclusions of the second analysis."
"Mr. Gu, this is a serious violation of the company's standard operating procedures. Which engineer did this?"
The speaker was the only woman in the meeting room, sitting directly opposite Yu Sheng and to Song Jingyu's right. As she asked who it was, her gaze had already fallen on Wei Hongsi.
Wei Hongsi calmly returned the gaze. This woman was very well-maintained; although she was over forty, she could still pull off the look of someone in their early thirties, though the freckles on her neck were hard to conceal.
Gu Shiming continued, "This morning, the Eighth Department received an additional commission from the same client, requesting an analysis of the content of the video 'GG'. Our engineers used CMS to perform three analyses, and the conclusion was that this 'GG' would trigger several specific negative emotions in the subconscious of the viewers, a situation that occurred in a very high percentage of the subjects."
"The detailed data regarding the two aforementioned analysis commissions, as well as my and Director Yu's personal opinions on the second analysis commission, were all included in the report submitted to the Chief Accountant."
After he finished speaking, Chao Ji Yongsheng nodded and ignored the woman from beginning to end.
Ji Yongsheng said, "I will show you the report submitted by President Gu later. First, I will go through it with you in the order in which the problems were discovered."
"President Ji, I think if we're going to go through things chronologically, then following the operating procedures should be the top priority." It was the same woman who spoke, clearly annoyed by Gu Shiming's disregard.
"That's true." Ji Yongsheng nodded, glanced at a document beside him, and then looked at Wei Hongsi. "Engineer Wei, Director Ding Yafan from the HR department has questioned your work procedures. Please explain."
Wei Hongsi stood up, nodded to Ji Yongsheng first, and then looked at Ding Yafan.
Seeing that the young man was indifferent and did not speak first, Ding Yafan felt uncomfortable because he did not take her seriously at all. It was as if he and Gu Shiming were taught by the same master.
She coldly questioned, "Did you even receive any onboarding training? Using your own self-written algorithm model without authorization at work is a serious violation of regulations, don't you know that?"
Wei Hongsi said, "I got a perfect score on my onboarding training assessment. If General Manager Ding has any questions about this, he should first check the relevant records in the HR department, instead of asking me."
Ding Yafan suppressed her anger: "Since that's the case, then you knowingly committed the crime!"
Wei Hongsi said, "Those who violate the operating procedures should either be doing so knowingly or it is a dereliction of duty by the HR department."
Ding Yafan nearly exploded with anger, her voice shrill: "Is that what I asked? Why did you use your own self-written algorithm model to process client requests and even include the results in the report? Answer me!"
Wei Hongsi said, "Because the company's standard model gives a focus retention rate of over 70%, according to operating procedures, I can question this conclusion and verify it in other credible ways."
"Deputy Director Ding probably doesn't understand what 'over 70%' means." Gu Shiming's voice came from above, emphasizing the word "deputy." But he didn't look at Ding Yafan when he said this.
Yu Sheng smiled and said, "Mr. Ding, the optimal retention rate for business users is between 62% and 68%. A figure of 70%+ is clearly too high and can be classified as an anomaly."
Ding Yafan's neck turned bright red, but for a moment she didn't know how to refute him.
"Can Wei's use of his own algorithm model for verification be considered a reliable method? Even if the conclusions in your report are correct." The speaker was on Wei Hongsi's side, one seat away from Yu Shengzhi.
Upon being reminded, Ding Yafan immediately shouted, "Your model hasn't been reviewed by the company; that's still a serious violation!"
Ji Yongsheng looked at Wei Hongsi with great interest: "Engineer Wei, this is Mu Wei, the director of our fifth department."
Wei Hongsi thought to himself, "My senior brother has quite a few enemies in the company, but aren't you guys a little too hasty?"
He knew very well that Ding Yafan and Mu Wei were targeting Gu Shiming, and he was just a casualty caught in the crossfire, but he didn't care.
Whether forced or voluntary, once you've taken the lead, there's no reason to back down. Otherwise, you'll be seen as a pushover, and everyone will want to take advantage of you.
Moreover, these two people are really not a threat.
Ding Yafan clearly doesn't understand the gravity of the situation. Her actions, targeting him, are heavily influenced by personal grudges and are likely purely intended to annoy Gu Shiming. This also shows that she can only nitpick over trivial matters and doesn't possess any real ability.
It's unclear what Mu Wei's purpose was; perhaps he felt resentful, like He Feng. Among the management present, Gu Shiming was the youngest, yet ranked first among the six general managers, so it's understandable that he was the object of jealousy.
But one thing is certain: Mu Wei is definitely in trouble today, because the Cognitive Mirror System is managed and maintained by the Fifth Department. Even if he wasn't involved in a crime, he was at least negligent in his duties, and he will most likely lose his position as director.
"The algorithm model I wrote myself is based on the theory in my master's thesis," Wei Hongsi said calmly. "That paper has been published in the Journal of Cognitive Science and received a five-star recommendation."
The Journal of Cognitive Science is a core journal sponsored by the Institute of Cognitive Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is the most authoritative academic journal in the field of cognitive science in China.
Most of those present were industry professionals, and they were well aware of this journal's standing in the field. For Wei Hongsi to publish a paper in it was already quite remarkable, let alone receive a five-star recommendation.
Many people thought that this young man seemed to be an extraordinary talent.
Upon hearing the name of the Institute of Cognition of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mu Wei couldn't help but hesitate.
The endorsement from a national-level research institution indicates that Wei Hongsi's algorithm model is credible, at least theoretically.
While it's true that theory is theory and model is model, and the former is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the latter, judging from that kid's confident demeanor, he might just be waiting for me to continue questioning him.
Ding Yafan dared not speak easily, fearing that she would become a laughing stock again, and just waited to see how others would refute her.
