Chapter 29: The Night Watchman's Proof Triggered
Chapter 29: The Night Watchman's Proof Triggered
Around 1:30, Lucius entered the meeting room of the Splin Detective Agency.
He saw Felix and Oliver sitting at opposite ends of the sofa, talking to a stranger dressed in a gold and red church robe.
"Good afternoon, Captain Felix, Oliver, uh, and this gentleman?" Lucius walked into the drawing room and nodded toward the sofa.
"You must be Lucius. I'm glad you call me sir, even though I'm only eight years old," the stranger in church attire spoke first.
"Eight years old?" Lucius looked at the eight-year-old boy, who was at least two meters tall and whose body seemed to burst out of his clothes, and exclaimed in surprise, "Grey!?"
He looked at Felix as he spoke, his eyes conveying a clear meaning:
You call this eight years old?
Felix chuckled and introduced:
"Grey's mental state was very strong, which manifested in his rapid growth. He was taller than me when he was five years old. With the help of the church, he learned to actively control the intensity of his mental state and eventually stabilized at this size. Although he looks a bit big, at least he won't continue to grow."
Lucius nodded, silently reciting the knowledge of mental images:
The mind is the principle of life, survival, and protection; it is the ceaseless drumbeat and dance, connected with music.
"Captain, I think this looks amazing! Every kid in the church school calls me 'boss'!" Gray was clearly much more satisfied with his physique than Felix, and he showed off his well-developed muscles in various poses as he spoke.
Felix raised an eyelid, then quickly changed the subject to Lucius:
"Lucius, how's it going? The Night's Watch badge shouldn't be causing you any trouble, right?"
Upon hearing this, Lucius took out the exquisite badge from inside his coat and said humorously:
"Actually, it does have some impact. For example, yesterday when I was processing a fish, I thought about whether to release it back into the Hull River and let it try its luck in freshwater, even though it was a saltwater fish."
Felix picked up on his words and laughed:
"If that fish can travel along the Hull River, through the Humber estuary, and eventually to the North Sea, I believe it will survive."
Oliver had originally intended to tell some hellish jokes, such as "the survival instinct of a saltwater fish might allow it to adapt to a freshwater environment," but when his gaze fell upon the Night's Watchman's Token, his expression changed abruptly, and he exclaimed in shock:
"Lucius, you've run into Marcus!? The lamps in this Night's Watch token have been completely depleted!"
Oliver's words exploded in the room. Felix's eyes flashed with a golden-red light, and he immediately activated the Dimensional Realm.
Gray was the same; the red light in his eyes outlined a heart pattern. He had already learned about the trouble his new teammate was in during his casual conversation with Oliver.
Lucius stood frozen in place, unable to freely open the dimensional realm, only able to recall the people he had encountered from yesterday until now.
"As expected," the golden-red hue in Felix's eyes faded.
In his field of vision just now, the bright yellow color representing the light on the Night's Watch badge had disappeared, and what Lucius now held was merely an ordinary badge with considerable collectible value.
While Lucius was reflecting, Felix explained:
"This Night Watchman's Token has a rather unique defense mechanism. When a Lamp Sequencer uses Dream Invasion on a target, it will create a dream that the Sequencer believes to be real, thus letting the target go. Specifically, it will fall into a short period of sleep."
"A brief nap?" Lucius suddenly remembered the artist who was bundled up tightly in the carriage at noon, and he said:
"I remember now! I know where I met Marcus before."
Lucius organized his thoughts and recounted what had happened at noon. Felix and Oliver exchanged a glance.
Felix quickly said, "I'll go get Miles."
"I'm going to change my clothes," Oliver said.
After they finished speaking, the two quickly walked towards the side door, leaving Lucius and Gray in the reception room.
Only then did Green show his sense of justice as a child, waving his fist and saying:
"Hey! I didn't expect Marcus to be so impatient. He took the initiative to make a move on the very first day the light in his head was formed. After Captain Felix and the others found the carriage, they had Miles extract the evil name again. This is the second time. I don't believe we're so unlucky that we have to be guaranteed to find that guy."
Seeing that Grayby looked even more anxious than himself, Lucius smiled and nodded in agreement.
While the two waited, Felix led Oliver and Miles into the living room, and the three of them changed into the same police uniforms that Lucius had seen them in before.
"Let's go!" Felix looked at Lucius, then turned to Gray and instructed him:
"Go to the police station now and call Charles and Eleanor over. Have them watch the artifact storage room and the detective agency respectively. It's Obsidian time now; Jasmine will be on duty in half an hour."
Gray nodded, and the two parted ways in front of Building 19.
The four walked to the steam tram station, where a steam tram happened to stop. They then rode it all the way to the stop closest to the university town.
After getting off the carriage, Lucius suddenly realized that it was Saturday and public carriages were running very infrequently. He wondered when the carriage they were waiting for would come again. Did they have to wait forever?
Oliver smiled faintly, took out a transparent crystal pendulum, first showed Lucius how the pendulum was stationary, and then looked up at the stone pavement outside the platform.
"Is this divination?" Lucius asked.
“That’s right,” Oliver explained. “Most Radiant Ones gain the ability of divination during their second advancement. Of course, this is also related to the secret knowledge they chose at that time. I will explain this to you in detail in the advanced course after you are promoted to Banquet Apostle.”
Lucius felt a surge of anticipation, then saw a bright yellow gleam in Oliver's eyes. Three seconds later, the crystal pendulum began to swing clockwise.
Oliver observed the amplitude and speed of the swaying for a moment, then immediately reported the result:
"The carriage will arrive here after the fourth rotation, around 8 pm. The error will not exceed 20 minutes."
"Eight o'clock in the evening?" Lucius took out his pocket watch; it wasn't even 2:30 in the afternoon yet.
"Of course we won't wait here forever." Oliver put the pendulum back in his palm and winked at Lucius.
Felix, standing nearby, gave the same smile and pointed to the public notice board on the side of the platform:
"We'll go to the General Public Carriage Company now and check the dispatch record of the carriage that will pass through this station around 8 p.m., see its next stop, and then go to the nearest area that can be sealed off to wait."
