Chapter 53 The Wildfire
Chapter 53 The Wildfire
Although the mines were destroyed, the battle wasn't over. Hua Ye withdrew from the remaining mines, concentrating all his forces near Tiancheng Star, and tripled the number of guards. Keisha could only shift her focus to supply depots and transport lines, striking and retreating, looting and fleeing.
Liang Bing was in charge of leading the team out, returning about every three days. Sometimes she would bring ore, sometimes weapons, and sometimes new recruits. Keisha's star map was gradually filled with markings. Although the number of people was increasing and the equipment was becoming more and more sufficient, the things that were lacking were still missing.
He Xi emerged from the cave and placed the newly improved armor beside the campfire. Keisha picked it up and tried it on. "How much lighter is it?" she asked.
He Xi said, "Twenty percent."
"What about protection?"
"It hasn't decreased," He Xi paused before saying, "but that's all there is to it. Without the support of the equipment, it can't be modified anymore."
Keisha didn't speak. Liang Bing, munching on dry rations beside her, mumbled a question, "Sister He Xi, can't it be any lighter?"
He Xi completely ignored her. Zhao Chen sat by the fire, looking at the crystal plates seized from the mine. The information was extremely limited, mostly just transport records and personnel lists; there wasn't a single truly useful item. Hua Ye's weapons workshop and research center were all on Tiancheng Star; the mine only produced roughly processed dark copper.
He looked up. Zhao Chen said, "I'm going to Tiancheng Star."
Keisha's hand suddenly paused. Liang Bing almost spat out the dry food in her mouth. She hurriedly said, "Brother-in-law, are you crazy?"
He Xi didn't speak, only silently watching Zhao Chen. Keisha put down the armor she was holding and hurriedly asked, "What are you going to Tiancheng Star for?"
Zhao Chen looked at her. "Get the equipment. Get the technical documents."
Keisha stared at Zhao Chen with some concern for a few seconds. "Do you know how many guards are on Tiancheng Star?"
"Know."
Do you know where Hua Ye is?
"I know."
Keisha remained silent. Liang Bing, however, was stamping her feet anxiously beside her. "Sister, you can't let your brother-in-law go to his death!"
Keisha ignored her and focused on Zhao Chen, asking, "Are you confident?"
Zhao Chen looked at her with a reassuring gaze. "Yes."
Keisha remained silent for a long time this time. "For how many days?"
"Three days."
If you don't come back in three days, I'm coming to find you.
Zhao Chen nodded. A flash of golden light, and he vanished into the starry sky. Liang Bing looked in the direction where the golden light disappeared, then turned to look at Keisha. "Sister, you really let him go?"
Keisha didn't speak, only continuing to absentmindedly flip through the star map. He Xi stood at the entrance of the cave, looking in the direction where the golden light disappeared. She stood there for a long time before turning around and entering the cave.
On Tiancheng Star, outside the weapons workshop.
Zhao Chen landed in a shadowy spot on the outskirts of the workshop, concealing his presence and suppressing his aura to the extreme. His sharp eyes scanned the entire workshop area; there were far more guards than in the mine, patrols were constant, and three detection arrays covered the entire airspace. Zhao Chen crouched in the shadows for half an hour before finding a blind spot to slip into.
The workshop was larger than Zhao Chen had imagined. Rows of production lines, piles of semi-finished products—dark copper armor plates, standard short swords, energy circuit engraving platforms—were neatly stacked. In one corner lay several crates of finished armor, far more refined than those seized from the mines. Zhao Chen didn't stop, continuing further in. He passed the production lines, the materials warehouse, and the testing area, finally arriving at a locked data room.
Crouching by the door, Zhao Chen scanned the area with his Fiery Eyes. There were three protective barriers on the door, and no guards nearby. The Immortal-Slaying Flying Knife shot out from the spatial fluctuations, severing the barriers one by one, and the door finally opened.
The archive room wasn't large, containing only a few rows of shelves piled high with crystal plates and some physical blueprints. Zhao Chen glanced at them, grabbed the crystal plates and blueprints, and stuffed them into his storage ring. Dark copper smelting formulas, energy circuit design diagrams, first and second generation divine body modification plans, gene sequence adjustment parameters—he didn't recognize them, but He Xi certainly would. So Zhao Chen took everything he could, and memorized what he couldn't.
Suddenly, footsteps sounded outside. Zhao Chen stuffed the last crystal plate into his storage ring, activated invisibility, and then hid himself against the door. The door was pushed open, and an angel in a white robe walked in, carrying a stack of blueprints. He walked to the shelf and then froze.
Before he could react, Zhao Chen had already cast a freezing spell, immobilizing him in place. He also casually put away the new blueprints. Zhao Chen retraced his steps, storing the various instruments he had been carrying into his storage ring. When he heard footsteps changing shifts outside, Zhao Chen had already slipped out through the ventilation duct he had come from. The patrol team outside the workshop had just changed shifts, and all three detection arrays were still active. Zhao Chen emerged from the back of the workshop, instantly activating his Earthwalking spell, and his entire body gradually sank into the ground.
In the outer region of Tiancheng Star, Zhao Chen emerged from underground and immediately activated the Golden Crow Escape Light at full power, ensuring there were no pursuers behind him.
By the time they returned to the asteroid, it was already dawn. Keisha was still sitting by the campfire, sword in hand. Liang Bing was crouching beside her, and He Xi stood at the cave entrance. Suddenly, golden light shone down, and Zhao Chen appeared beside the fire. Keisha couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. Liang Bing jumped up excitedly. "Brother-in-law! You're finally back!"
Zhao Chen nodded and then took things out of his storage ring. An engraving platform, a testing platform, refined dark copper, crystal plates, and blueprints were piled up on the floor. He Xi squatted down, her fingers touching the engraving platform, then picked up a crystal plate and activated it. A blue light screen projected out, displaying a dense array of energy circuit diagrams. She picked up another plate containing the second-generation divine body modification plan. Another contained gene sequence adjustment parameters. Her fingers traced across the crystal plates, her flipping through them faster and faster.
"Where did you get all these things?" He Xi asked in surprise.
Zhao Chen looked at her and slowly said, "Tiancheng Star. The data room of the weapons workshop."
He Xi stared at him for a few seconds, then didn't ask any more questions, continuing to flip through the documents. Liang Bing, feeling a little dizzy from looking at them, couldn't help but ask, "Sister He Xi, can you understand all of this?"
He Xi ignored her. Keisha then walked over and stood beside Zhao Chen. "Are you hurt?"
"No," Zhao Chen said.
Keisha didn't ask any more questions. At this moment, He Xi finished examining the last crystal plate and stood up. "These things will last me a long time." Carrying the pile of crystal plates, she turned and walked back into the cave. After taking a few steps, she suddenly stopped and called out, "Zhao Chen."
"Um."
"Thanks." After saying that, she walked away without turning back.
Liang Bing glanced at this person and that person, muttering softly, "Why is Sister He Xi suddenly so talkative today?" Keisha ignored her and sat down to continue studying the star chart. Liang Bing stood for a while, then, feeling bored, yawned. "Sister, I'm sleepy, I'm going to sleep now." After saying that, she crawled back into the cave and quickly fell silent.
Only Zhao Chen and Keisha remained by the campfire.
Keisha was looking down at the star chart, not looking up. Zhao Chen quietly approached, stopping when he was very close to her. Keisha's hand paused imperceptibly, then remained still. Suddenly, Zhao Chen reached out and moved the star chart away from her. Keisha looked up, meeting his gaze with a puzzled expression.
"What are you doing?"
Zhao Chen didn't answer. He reached out and braced himself against the rock beside her, then lowered his head and kissed her lips. Keisha didn't flinch, nor did she close her eyes. She simply looked at his face so close to hers, his golden eyes even more dazzling in the night than usual. Zhao Chen gently placed his hand on her waist, pulling her into his embrace. Keisha raised her hand and pressed it against Zhao Chen's chest, gently pushing but not pushing him away.
After kissing for an unknown amount of time, Zhao Chen finally let her go.
Keisha turned her head away, panting heavily, her face expressionless. She opened her mouth and complained, "What's gotten into you all of a sudden?"
"I miss you," Zhao Chen said.
Keisha didn't respond to Zhao Chen's words. She simply picked up the star map she had just put down again, and while continuing to flip through it, said, "Don't do it in front of Liang Bing next time."
Zhao Chen looked at her. "Liang Bing is asleep."
Keisha ignored him. Zhao Chen leaned against the nearby rock, closed his eyes, and didn't bother her. Keisha pretended to flip through a few pages of the star map before looking up and glancing at Zhao Chen. Then she continued flipping through the pages.
