Chapter 60 Chaos is Coming Soon
Chapter 60 Chaos is Coming Soon
The faint sound of footsteps, shoes scraping against the muddy ground, came from the entrance of his tent.
Simon slowly opened his eyes. The short nap had made him feel refreshed and his energy had been restored.
"How long have I been asleep?" he asked, looking up at the birdcage.
"Are you using me as an alarm clock?" Brienne muttered in the birdcage, but still replied, "More than seven thousand seconds, about two hours."
Simon felt as if he had rested for a long time, but in reality, less than two hours had passed. His need for sleep had been greatly reduced, and he could hardly help but suspect that his nerves had also been strengthened.
He sat on the ground, closed his eyes, and gathered information about the camp. He heard faint hissing sounds. Flani had not yet recovered. Klein squatted by the campfire, gasping for breath. His wounds had not yet healed. Some people were drinking water, some were eating... and some were lingering in front of his tent.
"Come in, Professor Loris," he called out to the tent flap.
The curtain was lifted, but it was not the hunched old man who entered the tent.
Elphis, a man wearing an iron mask, appeared before him.
He slowed his pace to make Simon misjudge his weight, and deliberately made his steps drag and unsteady to make Simon mistake him for Professor Loris.
"Interesting. Your hearing is terrifyingly sharp; you can even identify someone by their footsteps." Elphis seemed to have recovered well, stroking his chin thoughtfully. "Did you serve in the Wasteland Wolves Legion? Or did you only receive their training?"
"You look like you're recovering well; you even have time to joke with me."
"Hehe, thanks to that old man, he removed the shrapnel fragments from the wound on my back and diluted Flani's blood before injecting it into my body."
He bent his arm and clenched his fist; the treatment seemed to be quite effective.
"Let's get down to business. What are you planning to do next?" Simon cut to the chase. "If what Brock said is true, do you think I'll continue working with you?"
"No, if I were you, I would shoot myself dead after I fall into a coma, and then take the corpse and the flesh of the crime to the Empire to admit defeat."
Elphis's thoughts were clear, but he suddenly changed the subject.
"The problem lies with you, Mr. Simon. What do you want to do?"
Judging from the current situation, handing over Elphis and the flesh of the incriminating evidence, and begging for mercy from the Empire is the best solution, at least enough to save one's life.
But Simon did not do that.
The reason for this is still that piece of flesh that served as evidence of the crime.
That was Simon's biggest hand, his greatest hope to the outside world, and he was unwilling to give it up easily.
But that piece of meat was not only a hope, but also a ticking time bomb that could explode at any moment. The Empire was looking for it again, and the cave raiders were also coveting it.
Caught between various forces, he could die at any moment because of that piece of meat.
After a long silence, Simon finally spoke: "I will still trade with the cave raiders, but... this time I'll find a reliable one."
Elphes nodded thoughtfully, the slight upturn of his mask indicating his satisfaction with the answer.
"I want to make one last deal with you," he said slowly.
"Can I still trust you now?" Simon frowned slightly.
All the generous promises made at the beginning have vanished, and now he doesn't even believe the punctuation marks in Elphis's words.
Elphis shook his head: "You don't need to believe me. I'm just informing you of my upcoming itinerary..."
"Next, I will put on an act in front of the people of the Empire, telling them that I have obtained the flesh of the crime. I will play hide-and-seek with them in the forest. To be honest, my current condition is very bad. I can only buy you about a day at most. This is the limit of my body."
Behind the mask, the eyes held a detached indifference to life and death.
"I'll have Pike send a letter beforehand. Once the letter arrives, someone will come to meet you. You take the meat to the second level and trade it with other cave raiders."
Elphes risked his life.
"I'm getting more and more curious. Who exactly are you? And why are you going to such lengths to bring that piece of meat to the cave raiders?"
Elphis, that madman, dared to offend the Empire and even sacrifice his own life for the flesh that served as evidence of his crimes.
How much did the tomb raiders actually give him? No, at this point, it's no longer a question that can be solved with "benefits".
For him, the flesh of the incriminating evidence was not a commodity, not a bargaining chip, but something more important than life itself.
Paranoid; only this word can describe him.
He had been in the abyss for too long, so long that he had made a certain obsession the only reason to live, and he was willing to give his life to complete it.
However, when faced with Simon's questioning, he simply smiled nonchalantly.
"We're on the same page, Simon. I believe if you were in my shoes, you would have done the same thing... As for my identity, I'm sorry, I have to keep that a secret."
He suddenly remembered something, and for a moment a look of guilt flashed in his eyes behind the mask.
"If possible, could you please take care of Franny for me? I need to apologize to her; I have more important things to do and can't take her shopping for new clothes."
Just then, Simon's hearing picked up a new sound, a deafening roar, not far from their camp.
A hundred meters away from the camp, a large tree suddenly fell down.
They don't take detours; if they encounter two trees that are very close together, they will break one of them.
The tall figure broke through the churning fog, and steam spewed out from the fog, mingling with the mist.
The grey-white Sisters of Forgiveness team headed towards the camp.
The clanging of metal mingled with heavy footsteps as they flexed their wrists and swung the holy hammers inscribed with the precepts.
The nuns replaced their heavy shields with the Absolution Hammer, a silver hammer capable of destroying their enemies both mentally and physically.
If the Impure World Physicians are a special combat force providing logistics and clearing the battlefield with fire and poison gas, then the Sisters of Atonement are a truly violent legion that suppresses humanity and heretics. They will carry the Iron Emperor's mercy and end the lives of the guilty with a single blow of the Holy Hammer.
The leader was Father Andrei, a priest from the church. He led the way with a stern expression, holding the harpoon that was given as a gift in his hand.
He repeated the command in a cold voice:
"Kill all the tunnel raiders; if any criminal resists, kill them without exception."
……
At the same time, a large void.
Accompanied by heavy breathing, a hand covered in blood and ash suddenly emerged from the hole and rested on its edge.
Hands, arms, and finally the man covered in wounds.
The man collapsed at the edge of the great cavern. After several days of climbing, he finally escaped from the cavern.
To survive, he ate plants growing on the hollow rock walls and used bone spurs to catch birds that flew by from time to time, swallowing them whole.
He crawled laboriously on the ground, into the woods, devouring the weeds and fallen leaves without regard for dignity.
Having recovered considerably, he slowly stood up from the ground.
"I have returned!" he roared furiously to the heavens. "I swear in the name of Phardor and to the Mother of Abundance! I will kill that sinner! Until death do us part!"
