Chapter 6 Harvest
Chapter 6 Harvest
An hour and a half seemed to pass quickly as Xu Mo focused on his planning. The sky outside the window gradually darkened, and the light in the room became dim. Xu Mo stood up, stretched his body which had become stiff from sitting for so long, and felt that he had much more energy than before. His eyes became sharp and determined.
Regardless of whether the "familiar" home is behind the door, he must seize these sixty seconds to fight for a more solid future for his survival.
【00:02:10】
As the countdown was about to reach zero, Xu Mo walked to the security door, gently pressing his palm on the cold metal door panel, like a patient hunter, quietly waiting for the moment of the hunt to arrive.
The countdown in my mind, like a fuse that had burned out, finally reached its end—[00:00:00]!
A glint flashed in Xu Mo's eyes. Without any hesitation, he slightly tightened his grip on the door, and silently shouted in his heart:
"Open the door!"
As the glimmer of light shifted, the scene behind the door suddenly changed—
Xu Mo glanced at it, and his heart sank.
It's not the same house as last time.
Expectations were instantly dashed, and the meticulously planned efficient looting operation was rendered useless. Behind the door was a completely different room layout, and... it was a bit messy.
Time did not allow him to be disappointed; the sixty-second countdown had already begun to mercilessly tick away! He darted inside like a cheetah, his eyes scanning the surroundings rapidly like radar, determined to reassess the value of this new environment in the shortest possible time.
This is a typical apartment filled with anime and manga style. The walls are covered with brightly colored anime posters, and there are several exquisitely designed figurine display cases that he can't name at all. The bookshelves are crammed with comic books and light novels, and on the desk, besides the computer monitor, there are some model kits and painting tools piled up.
A faint smell of food lingered in the air. Xu Mo's gaze quickly settled on the computer desk, which could also be called a dining table or an office desk—a half-eaten fried rice takeout box, next to which was a disposable food container with a few duck necks and braised chicken feet left. What caught his eye even more were the several blister packs and granules scattered next to the keyboard, and the half-person-high, heavy-looking cardboard box under the table.
Xu Mo's brain quickly made a judgment: food, medicine, and that unknown cardboard box!
Acting faster than thinking, Xu Mo rushed to the computer desk, grabbed the strips of medicine, and glanced at them—amoxicillin capsules! Just the antibiotics he desperately needed! There was also a box of Lianhua Qingwen granules. Xu Mo was overjoyed; with this box of medicine, his illness would probably be cured.
Next, Xu Mo's attention turned to the two large bottles of cola. One bottle was already opened and about half-empty, while the other was intact with a brand-new label. High-sugar carbonated drinks are a great way to quickly replenish energy in the apocalypse, and an intact seal means absolute safety. Without hesitation, he picked up the large, unopened bottle of cola; its heavy weight reassured him.
At this point, twenty seconds had passed.
Xu Mo's gaze fell back on the half-open cardboard box, which seemed to be packed full. A thought flashed through his mind like lightning—a container.
Xu Mo bent down and used his free hand to suddenly lift the lid of the box.
The scene before him made his heart race—the box was neatly filled with various vacuum-packed snacks: beef jerky, nuts, biscuits, and several bags of vacuum-packed braised snacks.
These are all high-energy, easy-to-store, high-quality materials.
A clear plan instantly formed in his mind. Xu Mo steadily placed the large bottle of cola in his hand into the box, then quickly returned to his desk and swept several unopened packets of braised food into the box as well. He didn't leave the remaining half-full bottle of cola behind either.
Forty seconds
Xu Mo had already gathered all the readily available and valuable supplies into cardboard boxes. His gaze, like a highly precise scanner, swept across the entire room again, leaving no corner unchecked. The backpack was still nowhere to be seen; it seemed the room's occupant hadn't placed it in a conspicuous spot.
Just as Xu Mo was about to give up, his gaze fell on the slightly messy bed. An idea struck him, and he quickly stepped forward, not bothering to examine it closely, grabbing and rolling up the sheets, blankets, and pillowcases into a ball. Although it took up space, in the apocalypse, clean textiles were equally precious—they could be used for warmth, to filter water, and even as bandages in emergencies.
Xu Mo placed the roll of bedding on top of the already full cardboard box and then used both hands to lift the entire box off the ground.
"Hey, this is actually quite heavy."
The weight of the cardboard box itself, combined with the densely packed snacks, braised dishes, and cola inside, as well as the fluffy bedding on top, made it quite strenuous for him, but still within a manageable range. He adjusted his breathing and the posture while holding the box to ensure his center of gravity was stable.
【00: 55】
The countdown timer indicated that he had very little time left.
Without further hesitation, Xu Mo, carrying the bulky but hopeful box, took steady steps and crossed the threshold where the light shimmered.
The moment his feet touched the ground of the apocalyptic room, the portal behind him vanished silently, like wisps of smoke scattered by the wind, returning to the cold, hard, ordinary security door.
"Thump."
Xu Mo carefully placed the heavy cardboard box on the ground, letting out a long sigh of relief. Fine beads of sweat had already formed on his forehead. The intense focus and physical exertion were a considerable burden, even for someone whose body was recovering.
Looking down at his spoils: on top were rolled-up, clean sheets; lifting the sheets revealed a bulge of snacks, braised dishes, and the two crucial 1.5-liter bottles of cola. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the blister packs of life-saving amoxicillin and cold medicine, carefully placing them on the box.
Although he hadn't found the ideal backpack, the sturdy cardboard box and the unexpected bedding had far exceeded his expectations. The acquisition of antibiotics, in particular, seemed to have given him a sense of reassurance.
Xu Mo sat down against the wall, resting and recovering his strength while carefully reorganizing and classifying the new supplies.
Pharmaceuticals:
Amoxicillin capsules (three-platelet pack)
One box of Lianhua Qingwen granules
Beverages:
One 1.5-liter bottle of Coca-Cola (unopened)
One 1.5-liter bottle of Coca-Cola (opened, approximately 60% remaining)
12 bottles of mineral water (at the bottom of the box, no wonder it felt so heavy when Xu Mo carried it).
Food items (inside cardboard boxes):
Vacuum-packed beef jerky 10 packs
6 individually packaged bags of nuts
5 individually wrapped biscuits
Vacuum-packed braised chicken legs and duck necks, 25 packs in total.
Daily necessities:
1 thermos
One bed sheet, one quilt, and one pillow.
Container classes:
One sturdy cardboard box
Looking at the dazzling array of supplies before him, Xu Mo finally showed the first truly relaxed smile he had seen in days. Although the process had been somewhat bumpy, the gains from this "opening" were enormous. Not only did it solve the most urgent problem of medicine, but it also greatly replenished the reserves of food and water, and even yielded an unexpected bonus of bedding.
Xu Mo carefully sorted and stored the supplies, especially the half-full bottle of cola, which he tightened tightly and placed separately from the other supplies to prevent spillage. After doing all this, Xu Mo felt an unprecedented sense of security. The foundation for his survival was being strengthened little by little.
"Thank you, anime!" Xu Mo thought to himself with heartfelt gratitude.
