Chapter 56 Living
Chapter 56 Living
The sound of enemy footsteps, accompanied by the distant sounds of gunfire from the eastern side, grew fainter and fainter.
The white smoke gradually dissipated, leaving behind the smells of gunpowder, blood, and burning corpses.
The six people leaning against the steel shipping container listened to the quiet around them, and their tense nerves suddenly relaxed.
Yuri glanced at Roman, who was covered in blood, while Roman turned to Artyom, who was panting heavily.
The six people looked at each other in bewilderment.
"Hahaha……"
Someone chuckled first, and then the entire aisle of the container was filled with the hoarse, tired, yet frantic laughter of six people.
The laughter lasted only a dozen seconds before stopping, replaced by a collective gasp of surprise.
Everyone began to treat each other's wounds.
Lu Ye leaned against the edge of the container, rolled up the cuffs of his tactical pants, took out iodine swabs from his first-aid kit, and cleaned the bloody abrasions on his knees and elbows caused by the metal.
Compared to others, he was the luckiest, having not suffered direct gunshot or stab wounds.
After finishing bandaging, Lu Ye glanced at Yuri.
He was spraying tactical gel onto the cut on his thigh when Lu Ye walked over and sat down next to him.
He took out bandages from the first aid kit and began to bandage Yuri.
"Lu." Yuri's voice was a little hoarse, lacking its usual coldness. "If you've earned enough money from this mission to go home, then go home."
Lu Ye paused slightly as he was bandaging the wound.
He lowered his head and skillfully wrapped the bandage around his elbow, biting one end with his teeth to tighten it and tie a knot.
"There's no going back." Lu Ye's tone was calm, without any ripples.
Yuri looked at Lu Ye's face, blackened by gunpowder, and seemed to want to say something, but in the end he didn't ask.
Among the mourners, each has a past they can't talk about.
He reached out his blood-stained hand and patted Lu Ye's shoulder hard.
"Since we can't go back, let's try our best to survive!"
Lu Ye nodded.
He looked around. Eugene was stitching up Roman's thigh wound, and Artyom was re-stabilizing the bulletproof plate on Ruslan's broken ribs.
Of the six people, only he was capable of taking action.
Although his muscles were still sore, he still picked up the SVCh sniper rifle with one hand, stepped on the container's latch, and, enduring the pain, climbed to the top of the container using both hands and feet.
"Lu? Where are you going?" Artyom below looked up and asked.
"Be on guard. Also, check if there are any escapees." Lu Ye's voice came from above.
He redeployed the infrared camouflage netting on top of the container and set up his sniper rifle.
He was genuinely on guard, but what he was more eager to do was hunt down any who slipped through the net and gain points.
Points are his lifespan; they enable him to grow and become stronger quickly, and are his only means of survival in this world.
-----------------
Lu Ye lay prone on the high ground, using a dual-mode sight combining thermal imaging and low-light to get a clear view of the battle situation in the core area of Kalinovka.
The fighting on the east side is rapidly spreading towards the center.
Major Vorov's armored company demonstrated the Russian regular army's extremely high tactical skills and overwhelming firepower.
From Lu Ye's perspective, three BTR-82A wheeled infantry fighting vehicles were advancing along the main road in a triangular formation.
The 30mm automatic cannon on top of the tank roared continuously, and orange-red tracer rounds pounded the concrete fortifications surrounding the control building.
On both sides of the tank, dozens of Russian infantrymen wearing night vision goggles took turns providing cover as they advanced.
They gave the remaining Ukrainian troops no chance to counterattack.
The advance team approached the first floor of the control building, and two flashbang grenades were accurately thrown in through the broken window.
"Bang! Bang!"
In the instant the white light flashed, the infantry squad, like a sharp blade breaching a door, swiftly cut into the building's interior.
This was immediately followed by a burst of short bursts of fire and the muffled thuds of grenades.
In less than ten minutes, green fluorescent lights, indicating safety, began flashing in the windows on the second and third floors of the control building.
The gunfire on the north side of Kalinovka completely ceased, which meant that the entire camp had been completely occupied by the Russian army.
This blitzkrieg, which lasted for nearly two hours, has finally come to an end.
Lu Ye successfully picked off two enemy soldiers, [Killed 2 enemy soldiers, reward 200 points!]
Just then, a crackling sound of electricity came through the tactical headsets of Lu Ye's team.
"Black Scythe Squad. Yuri, are you still breathing?" Major Wolf's voice came through.
"Alive. I've let you down, Major."
There was a noticeable pause of about two seconds on the other end of the channel.
"Hahaha! Yuri, what are you saying! You guys are heroes who took down the enemy commander!" Wolf's tone instantly returned to enthusiasm. "Where are you now?"
"It's over here with the target cargo. Behind the second row of freight cars on the south side," Yuri reported the location.
"Major, although we blew up the M-30 highway, that can only delay the Ukrainian rapid reaction force for half an hour at most. They could arrive at any time by detouring, so we must act quickly and get the goods out."
"Don't worry, Yuri," Wolf's voice was extremely confident. "I always have a backup plan."
"An Air and Space Force Su-34 fighter-bomber is circling overhead, ready to go. We have plenty of time to move the cargo."
-----------------
A few minutes later, the roar of a diesel engine approached the south freight car area.
Two Tiger high-mobility armored off-road vehicles equipped with reactive armor, under the cover of two BTR combat vehicles, rolled over the gravel square and stopped in front of the wreckage of the first row of carriages.
The car door opened, and a portly officer dressed in the combat uniform of a Russian commander jumped out; it was Major Vorov.
His casual gaze froze the moment it swept over the battlefield before him.
On the gravel square, two Ukrainian BTR-80 armored vehicles were almost completely destroyed, with their turrets blown more than ten meters away.
The ground was littered with severed limbs and mangled corpses.
The strong smell of blood in the air made even Wolf frown.
He walked along the corpses scattered on the ground toward the second carriage, his heart filled with shock.
"More than fifty people!" Wolf secretly gasped.
Six people, just six people, and without any heavy firepower support!
He walked to the front of the container and saw Yuri and his five men leaning against the metal sheet.
Yuri's thigh was wrapped in bandages, Roman was treating a knife wound, Artyom's arm was covered in blood, Eugene was pressing on his shoulder, and Ruslan was leaning against the innermost side, panting heavily.
Although the five people were in a sorry state and were injured, they all survived!
A barely perceptible hint of regret flashed deep in Wolf's eyes once again.
He quickly adjusted his facial expression, laughing loudly as he stepped forward: "Yuri! Well done! I made a huge profit hiring you!"
After looking around, Wolf noticed that one person was missing.
He immediately realized that the cannon fodder was dead.
He was secretly delighted, but deliberately put on a sad expression: "Yuri, why are there only five of you? Where's that new recruit who was supposed to be your cannon fodder?"
"Did you die in the firefight just now? 5% profit, you really lost big time."
