Chapter 517: [Crimson Inheritance] (36)
Silvanus continued walking through the darkness. By instinct, he raised a hand and pressed it against his abdomen. As expected, his intuition had been correct. The farther he went, the weaker the influence of what Daisy had left inside him became.
When that bizarre creature had approached earlier, Silvanus had clearly felt pain spreading through his body, along with the sensation of his nerves being tightly gripped. The thing had obviously been trying to control him.
If not for the faith energy he had accumulated, he certainly would not have been able to lunge forward, shove Elya backward, and avoid the creature’s attack.
Silvanus had promised that he would help Daisy. Of course, he had never truly intended to help her, so Daisy had made sure he would have no choice but to fulfill that promise.
Yet this place seemed isolated from the outside world. Was there something different about it?
Silvanus could not help recalling his own words.
Was the darkness really protecting him?
What a ridiculous thought...
Just as Silvanus was thinking that, a somewhat familiar sound suddenly echoed from the distance.
"Whoop! Whoop!"
Silvanus lifted his eyes in confusion, his expression filled with disbelief.
But no matter how unbelievable something might seem, when it was destined to happen, it would happen eventually.
A series of heavy waddling footsteps sounded out, like a duck hurrying forward.
Immediately afterward came the heavy flapping of wings. Upon hearing those sounds, Silvanus almost instinctively spread his arms.
Thump!
A soft, feather-covered body crashed heavily into his chest, filling his embrace.
Silvanus wrapped his arms tightly around the swan and nearly cried out in delight.
"Matt!"
"Whoop~"
Matt responded enthusiastically. He continuously rubbed his head against Silvanus’s neck, then against his chin.
"Why are you here?" Unless...
As that thought crossed Silvanus’s mind, the darkness beneath his feet seemed to part, forming a broad path that led directly toward a throne high above.
A single beam of faint light shone down from the peak of the seemingly endless space, turning the center into the only illuminated place in this realm. Though dim and hazy, it was still the brightest light to be found here.
By the faint light, Silvanus lowered his head and noticed that Matt was staring intently at him. In those amber eyes, Silvanus’s reflection appeared as a strange mass of smoke, its color impossible to discern.
Silvanus could not help but shiver slightly.
He looked away, and with a single thought, he found himself seated upon the throne at the center of the space.
He still possessed very little, but in this place, he would forever be its ruler.
"Let’s see what has been happening out there..."
Matt let out an approving call. His large eyes seemed to possess thoughts of their own as he stretched out his neck, staring at the ground below, which had transformed into something like ink poured into clear water, spreading and swirling in dark patterns.
The scene inside the dungeon unfolded before them.
At the same time, outside...
"Hah... gasp... hah..."
Elya was like someone who had just been pulled from the water after nearly drowning, desperately opening her mouth to gulp down air.
But it was all an illusion.
At this moment, she was merely a shadow clinging to the wall inside Silvanus’s room. She no longer needed to breathe, nor did she even have a heartbeat.
The suffocating sensation of death she had experienced moments ago had simply terrified her so thoroughly that she could no longer distinguish reality from instinct.
That’s right.
She had just died...
[Hahaha, look at that expression. What a joke.]
[She’s definitely not an Heir. No Heir could possibly be this useless.]
[A coward. No matter how great your power is, it won’t save you.]
[You could try begging. In a sense, we’re not that different from the Gods, after all.]
The mocking and malicious comments streamed by one after another.
Elya clenched her fists tightly. Only she knew how badly her resolve had been shaken.
After just a single incident, the viewers had immediately reverted to their original attitudes. The flattering praise and admiration were gone. They spoke as though her death was already inevitable.
No.
How could that be?
It wasn’t too late yet. She still had a chance!
Thinking of Neo, who was still inside this room, Elya gradually calmed down.
Neo was Silvanus’s son.
Silvanus would never abandon Neo.
As long as she could get her hands on Neo, then even if Silvanus was still alive, she would be able to use the child as leverage against him!
Sure enough, her original plan had not been wrong at all.
With that thought in mind, Elya quickly turned her attention toward the room.
Unlike the third floor, the darkness on the second floor was entirely different. Thanks to the moonlight filtering in from outside, Elya could still clearly make out the scene within the room.
Neo was asleep on the bed.
Meanwhile, at the tea table off to one side, Nick sat staring wide-eyed into the darkness. The five fingers resting on the tabletop continuously lifted and lowered in turn, tapping against the surface without producing the slightest sound. In his other hand, he tightly gripped a comic book. His entire body was stiff, like a student sitting in the front row while a teacher conducted a surprise oral quiz.
Just an ant, that’s all.
Elya thought to herself before slowly slipping through the patches of shadow scattered throughout the room.
At this point, she no longer wanted to make a scene. She intended to drag Neo into the darkness and leave this place without any conflict.
After all, there was still a terrifying creature lurking outside.
Having experienced death once already, she had no desire to go through it a second time.
What Elya didn’t know was that something even more terrifying was right in front of her.
The darkness crept onto the blankets like a serpent stalking its prey, ready to swallow it whole.
Then a small hand reached out and grabbed it.
The grip looked gentle, yet it was like an inescapable shackle from which nothing could break free.
Neo stared at the thing in his hand as though puzzled, his voice filled with confusion.
"Why aren’t you dead yet?"
Terror exploded in Elya’s heart.
She desperately tried to pull her body free from Neo’s grasp, but it was useless.
The surroundings were completely different, yet the scene of her death seemed about to repeat itself all over again.
